Tomescu-Dita Wins Women’s Marathon

Constantina Tomescu-Dita of Romania won the women’s marathon at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games earlier today.  The 38-year-old finished the course with a time of 26.44 minutes and ended up running alone for more than half the race!

Dobrynska Wins Women’s Heptathlon 800m

Nataliia Dobrynska of Ukraine was all smiles as she celebrated winning the Women’s Heptathlon 800m Final and the gold medal at the National Stadium on Day 8 of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.  She finished the event with a score of 6733.

Russia’s Borchin Wins 20km Walk

Russia’s Valeriy Borchin won the 20km race-walk, finishing just 14 seconds ahead of former Olympic champion and three-time world champion, Jefferson Perez of Ecuador. Jared Tallent of Australia earned the Bronze Medal.
Defending Olympic champion, Ivano Brugnetti of Italy finished out of the medals.

Poland’s Majewski Takes Gold in Shot Put

Poland’s Tomasz Majewski won the Gold Medal in the shot put event, topping American Christian Cantwell, the two-time indoor world champion and the favorite to win the event. Cantwell took the Silver and Andrei Mikhnevich of Belraus was awarded the Bronze Medal.
Canada’s Dylan Armstrong finished in fourth place, missing a medal by just one centimeter.

Ethiopia’s Dibaba Wins Women’s 10,000m

The track and field events (properly the Athletes events) began today in Beijing at the Bird’s Nest Stadium. One of the first races was the women’s 10,000m contest.

Seven Russian Athletes Fail Doping Tests

What a disappointment!  Seven members of the Russian Olympic team have tested positive for doping.  The IAAF has been conducting an investigation for the past 18 months and have chosen to suspend the female athletes and have accused them of tampering with the urine samples.
