Woe for Houston Rockets Fans, NBA Fantasy Managers, and the Chinese Men’s Basketball Team
The announcement that Yao Ming will be out for the rest of the NBA season has created shockwaves, and with good reason. Fans of the Houston Rockets are faced with yet another first-round exit from the NBA playoffs. In the NBA fantasy league, a virtual league where statistically productive players are keys to winning, managers are now without a statistical monster (2008 season averages: 22 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2.4 assists).
But perhaps its the Chinese Men’s basketball team who are most affected by Yao Ming’s injury. The microfracture on his left foot, which probably won’t heal by the Beijing Olympics, means that the team will be without a world-class player come Summer. During an event happening on the team’s home court, nonetheless. Yao Ming has consistently improved as an NBA player, slowly learning the aggressiveness and deft touch needed to succeed underneath the basket.
I can now imagine the grumblings of some members in the Chinese Olympic committee: what’s the point of letting Yao play if we can’t even use his ever-improving abilities when it really counts, nationally? One thing’s for sure: Yao must feel really terrible about everything.
