It was another exciting night of swimming at the Qwest Center in Omaha last night. Two new world records were set, in both the Men’s and the Women’s 100m Backstroke events.
Natalie Coughlin, 25, the Gold Medal winner in Athens, finished first last night with a world record time of 58.97. Second by a fraction of a second was Margaret Hoelzer. Both women will compete in Beijing.
It was the 2004 Gold Medal winner leading the pack in the men’s competition, also. Aaron Piersol finished first with a world record time of 52.89 seconds. The fight for second place was exceptionally close, with 6′ 8″ Matt Grevers touching the wall a hundredth of a second ahead of Ryan Lochte and Randall Bal, who had the fastest qualifying time. Grevers will join Piersol in Beijing.
