The Watercube Unveiled
Last Monday, the organizers of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games unveiled their new National Aquatics Center, more pithily known as the “Watercube.” The news report on the venue reveals impressive specs:
The venue has 6,000 permanent and 11,000 temporary seats. Like the 91,000-seat National Stadium — the “Bird’s Nest,” which will be completed in March — both are seen as works of art and will anchor the Olympic Green area.
The building, which will host the Games’ water-related events, was designed to be useful even after the Games, a welcome feature for a structure that required the investment of millions of dollars and three years of construction time.
