Light the Torch – Beijing Olympics and Other Olympic News

Six Arrested as Olympic Torch Arrives in Australia

by Jeanne Dupuis on April 23rd, 2008

The Olympic torch has been labelled an “embarrassment” by some of the media in Australia where the torch arrived today.  Things got so out of hand that six people were arrested and officials have braced themselves for more protests.  One man and a woman hung a Tibeten flag on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and lasers were used to project the words “Don’t Torch Tibet” onto one of the structure’s pylons.

Four more people were taken into custody after raising a pro-Tibet banner on a prominent billboard in the city’s King’s Cross nightlife district, police said. They were charged with trespassing and later released.

As a result, Australian officials have been forced to shorten the relay route through Canberra on Thursday due to safety concerns.

All of these protests are just so sad to me.  I support bringing attention to China’s human right’s problems but I feel bad for these athletes.  Here’s a video of the coverage Down Under:
