Sanchez Prevails for Road Race Win

by Sandy Mitchell on August 9th, 2008

Olympics Day 1 - Cycling - Road

Samuel Sanchez, a 30-year-old cyclist from Spain, endured Beijing’s heat, humidity, and oppressive air quality to win the Olympic road race, a 245.4km (152 mile) route that crisscrosses the city of Beijing. Sachez finished the race in 6 hours, 23 minutes, and 49 seconds. Davide Rebellin of Italy earned the Silver Medal and Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland earned the Bronze.

Only 90 of the 143 competitors finished the race. That’s better than Athens, however, where fewer than half of the entrants finished the road race. (Athens is another city known for its poor air quality.)

The top US finisher was Levi Leiphiemer, who crossed the finish line in 11th place.
