Take a deep breath - it’s not what you think but that’s what they are calling it. American gymnast, Morgan Hamm, was warned after getting a prescribed anti-inflammatory injection without proper clearance. He tested positive for glucocorticosteroid on May 24 after receiving the shot on May 2nd for pain and inflammation in his left ankle. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency says that the drug can only be used during competition with an exemption.
Morgan claims that he didn’t know he needed to fill out the form but that he accepts responsibility for the oversight and called the warning “a fair decision.”
Honestly, I think that if physicians are going to treat Olympic athletes, they should become as familiar as possible with the protocols. The same can be said of coaches and, of course, athletes. I really hope this was an honest mistake and doesn’t materialize into anything in the future.
