Lagat Leads US Qualifiers in Men’s 1500m

Kenyan-born, Bernard Lagat easily won the men’s 1500m event at the US Olympic Track and Field Qualifying Meet in Eugene, Oregon last night. The 33-year-old competed in the 2000 and 2004 Games representing Kenya. He became a US citizen in 2004.
The 1500 is a story of immigrants. Second place finisher, Leonel Manzano was born in Mexico and moved with his family to Texas when he was four. He became a US citizen in 2004.
Third place finisher, Lopez Lomong was born in Sudan and lived ten years in a refugee camp after his family fled the dangerous situation there. One of the “Lost Boys of the Sudan,” he came to the US and lived with a foster family while in school. He became a US citizen in 2007.
Lagat, the reigning world champion in the 1500m, qualified earlier this week for the 5000m event.
