Kyle Shewfelt Recovering for Beijing Olympics
My favorite Canadian male gymnast, Kyle Shewfelt, suffered two broken legs and ligament damage last year before the world championships and he’s been working hard, often training in pain, to try to be ready for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He’s got less than four months but that doesn’t seem to be bothering him. He told the Calgary Herald: "I was always working against a deadline from the moment I injured myself," Shewfelt said yesterday at the University of Calgary gym.
"August eighth is the day it starts, and August ninth is the day we compete. For me, I’ve been the type of person who works great under deadlines. When the pressure is on, I find ways to make it happen."
It’s hard to believe that Kyle was in a wheelchair just last September! His training gym is just about 3 minutes from my house (I live almost directly across from Canada’s Olympic Park!) and it felt really sad knowing that this gold medal-winning athlete was wheeling around instead of tumbling and doing what he seems meant to do. I’m so glad to hear that he is on the mend.
Now, my only dilemma is who do I root for - Kyle or Paul Hamm? Who knows? Maybe one of the up and coming gymnasts will demand my attention instead.
I love the Olympics! I’m getting so excited!
