Japanese Synchronized Swimmer Faints
Hiromi Kobayashi, who is a member of Japan’s synchronized swimming team, apparently fainted in the pool during the finals today. The 23-year-old athlete from Osaka had to be taken out of the Water Cube on a stretcher after she hyperventilated at the end of her routine. The young woman, who is competing in her first Olympics, is said to be fine after having to be lifted out of the pool by two men in swimsuits.
An officer for the Japanese team said the following: “That kind of thing has happened to her before. She is a very nervous athlete. She is good. Don’t worry, she’s not in serious condition.” He added that she was resting at the arena and didn’t have to go to the hospital.
In the end, the team incurred a two-point penalty for touching the bottom of the pool and tied with the Americans for fifth place.
