Is Usain Bolt Disrespectful to Rivals?
International Olympic Committee president, Jacques Rogge, said that Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt, doesn’t show enough respect for his rivals. The track superstar, who broke the World Record in both the 100m and 200m races, was both praised and criticized by Rogge for his behavior after crossing the finish line.
Bolt, who Rogge says is “in another dimension to Phelps” and “must be considered like Jesse Owens in the 1930’s” has drawn ire because he didn’t shake hands with his opponents immediately following the races.
“…he still has to mature. He is a young man but he should show more respect for his rivals. That would be more in the spirit of the Olympic ideal. He should shake hands with them after the finish line. However, he is only 21 and he will learn. I have no problems with his showboating (prior to the race) but a shake of the hand or a tap on the shoulder immediately after the race would be a good gesture.
It would be good not to have a repeat of the ‘catch me if you can’ gesture.
Is he serious? I am sorry but I have a major problem with criticizing athletes (more like nitpicking) while the Games are still going on. He couldn’t privately discuss this with Bolt? Why did he have to publicly address this? I just don’t think it’s a very good example of, what did he call it? The “spirit of the Olympic ideal.”
Oh well. Since I’m talking about him, I’d like to wish Usain Bolt a very happy 22nd birthday today!

i dont think he was disrespectful, but i was rather annoyed that he didnt finish in his best time. to set a record, is one thing. to set it not trying, is a disappointment.
next time give the world a new chance, not a barely trying effort. grr

I beg to differ, i felt the race was awesome and not the typical everyday display. I can actually look forward to Bolts next event because i know he has it in him to break the record again. Great job Lightning!
