How to Say Hello in Mandarin

I was watching some ABC News show the other night and was startled out of my half-sleep when Bob Woodward started speaking Mandarin to a group of Chinese workers in Angola. Forget about the story they were doing about China investing in Africa; I was impressed by the former anchor’s language skills, especially since he is still recovering from the massive head injury he sustained while covering the war in Iraq.
Mandarin is an incredibly difficult language for Western tongues to get the feel for, but with 1.3 billion Chinese, it seems that we should be taking a stab at it, if only to just be friendly.
Qiu Gui Su, the About.com Guide to Mandarin, offers a nice introduction to greetings in Mandarin, complete with audio files. It’s a good place to start.
