Gatlin Suing to Compete in Olympic Trials
Banned Olympic sprinter, Justin Gatlin, wants to compete in the upcoming trials for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and is taking his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He filed a lawsuit yesterday, alleging that the penalty for his 2001 doping charges violates the Americans with Disability Act since, he claims, the medication he took was for attention deficit disorder.
The trials are just three weeks away but his lawyer is requesting an injunction that will allow him to compete.
All of this comes just days after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the four-year doping ban against Gatlin. It should be noted that the reigning Olympic 100-meter gold medalist has been charged with doping not once, but twice in his career. If, with his lawsuit, he gets the Court to overturn the 2001 ruling, his lifetime ban will be reduced to only a two-year ban which would allow him to compete in the trials.
I’m not sure how I feel about this. I can understand one positive test but I am inclined to side with the Court on this one since he was found guilty of doping twice. What do you think?
