Fracture Could Keep Radcliffe Out of Olympics
World marathon record holder, Paula Radcliffe, may miss the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games due to a low-grade stress fracture in her left femur. It’s always stressful when an athlete is injured but, obviously, it’s even worse when it is right before something like the Olympics. The British champion has said that she will be monitoring the injury, which also affects her hip, but that she “will need a bit of luck” to be able to compete.
Naturally, she was upset to learn about the fracture since she says that these Games have been her focal point and that competing is “hugely important” to her. The worst part is that she has had two previous MRI scans on the bone and the fracture was missed. Had she found out earlier she could have dealt with it in enough time to ensure her place in Beijing.
Although she must refrain from running for the next little while to give her bone a chance to begin healing, she plans to stay in shape by cross-training and swimming. She hopes to be back to her regular routine within two weeks.
If able to attend, Beijing will mark Paula’s fourth Olympics. I hope she makes it!
