Deena Kastor, has won yesterday’s U.S. Olympic marathon trials and earned a berth in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.  It will be the second Olympic marathon and third Olympics for Kastor, who ran the 10,000 meters in Sydney.

“I accomplished two major goals: first, to make the team and, secondly, to win,” said Kastor, who won the bronze medal in Athens despite fading in the U.S. trials and finishing second. “It’s an absolute honor that this is my third Olympic team. It feels just as sweet the third time around.”

She will be joined on the American marathon team by Magdalena Lewy Boulet and Blake Russell.  It’s particularly special since Boulet and Russel just narrowly missed out on making the last games when they finished 4th and 5th, respectively, at the 2004 trials.

Congratulations to all of these incredible women!  I have walked a marathon and all three of my children have done mini marathons and it’s incredibly difficult physically, as well as mentally.  I can’t wait to see how things unfold for this team at the Games!
