Childhood Olympic Memories

by Sandy Mitchell on May 13th, 2008

mexico city olympics

This week the b5media Sports Channel is sharing their earliest sport memories. For me, my first Olympic memory is of watching the 1968 Mexico City summer games. That was the season of George Foreman winning the Gold in heavyweight boxing, Dick Fosbury sharing his “Fosbury Flop” with the world in the high jump, and Al Oerter becoming only the second athlete to ever win four consecutive gold medals (in the discus throw).

For me, however, the games were all about the pagentry. As a young girl, I was fascinated by the flags; the exotic looks, costumes, and customs of the international athletes; and the sheer number of events. I never wanted it to end.

What was the first Olympics you watched? What was the most memorable part for you? Share your memories with “Light the Torch” readers by posting below.
