Light the Torch – Beijing Olympics and Other Olympic News

Beijing Air Quality Showing Improvement

by Jeanne Dupuis on July 31st, 2008

Olympics Previews Day -8

I have to be honest.  I am concerned about the air quality in Beijing because, ultimately, the health of the athletes is the most important thing.  Therefore, I’m thrilled to hear that, earlier today, the situation seemed to be improving.  According to the Canadian Press, “Beijing’s pollution levels dropped Wednesday to less than half of the previous day’s, the lowest reading since authorities began pulling cars off the road and shutting down factories to address athletes’ concerns about air quality ahead of the Olympic Games.”

Honestly, that is really great news for the athletes, fans, organizers and even for the residents who can really benefit from the long-term effects of decreased pollution. For more about how they have turned things around, read the whole article!

It’s been the rain that has cleared the air rather than the reduction in cars, factory closures. If the weather was warm and humid, I don’t think you would have seen an improvement. Most of the measures are short term only also, although at least it has made the government more aware of protecting the environment.

Agreed, Mike. Hopefully, they will feel and see the difference and want to maintain this long after the games have ended.
