Just when you thought that the Beijing Olympics could not be any more troubled, algae blooms and covers one-third (yes, a third!) of the sea where the sailing competitions are supposed to take place.

Some of the athletes, like U.S. team member, Carrie Howe, are pitching in to remove the green gunk.  While she and her three-person squad practice, Howe must dip her hand into the water (if you can call it that) and remove the algae from their boat’s rudder at least three to four times an hour!

For more in-depth information on the various theories for why the algae has bloomed (along with a nasty smell in some areas), read the full article.
