7 July 2007 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded the broadcast rights for the Olympic Games in 2010 and 2012 to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) in South Africa, it was announced today.

SABC will offer increased coverage of the Olympic Games across a number of TV channels, including a commitment to air over 200 hours of live or same-day delayed coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games and a daily highlights programme for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. The organisation will also acquire the rights to air the Games across all media platforms, including TV, cable, satellite, internet and mobile telephones, as well as pay satellite rights in sub-Saharan Africa for the same period.

IOC President Jacques Rogge said “We are delighted to announce this agreement with SABC. Our partnership will ensure that as many people as possible are able to enjoy the exciting sports action of the Olympic Games in South Africa”.

IOC Executive Board member Richard Carrión, who led the negotiations, said “SABC has demonstrated a passion for the Olympic Games and a clear commitment to the values of the Olympic Movement. We look forward to continuing our work with SABC and ensuring increased coverage of the Games is brought to sports fans across South Africa.”
