Press Release: IOC assured and impressed after two day catch up ‘Project Review’
1 March 2007 - The International Olympic Committee today concluded two days of meetings with the organisers of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, LOCOG. The ‘Project Review’ - a regular six month catch up whereby an IOC delegation meets with the Games organisers to work through a wide range of areas and get an update on preparations, left the IOC feeling assured and impressed across the board.
Topics discussed between the IOC and LOCOG Chairman Sebastian Coe and CEO Paul Deighton, plus members of their team, covered; sport, transport, technology, finance, environment and sustainable development, commercial, communications and media operations, Olympic village, venue construction, venue management and Games operations, accommodation, culture, ceremonies and education, legal, human resources and programme management.
Commenting on the meetings, Denis Oswald, IOC Member and head of the delegation said, “Our meetings were very productive and effective. Regarding finance, we are very happy with LOCOG’s budget which was broken down clearly for us, and is balanced and unchanged at around the £2billion mark. We also have an understanding of the processes in place by which the government will finalise its budget. In the numerous functional areas LOCOG presented to us it was clear that there has been thorough work and progress since the IOC’s last visit. We look forward to returning with the full Coordination Commission in June.”
Executive Project Review
Project reviews allow the chairmen of the different IOC Coordination Commissions, along with members of the IOC administration and, where necessary, other Coordination Commission members and IOC experts, to be updated on the respective Olympic Games projects in between the full visits of the Coordination Commission. The full Commission visits once a year until four years before the Games, and then twice a year until the Games. The project review group visiting London this week was led by the IOC Coordination Commission Chairman Denis Oswald, and supported by a group from the IOC administration, headed by the Olympic Games Executive Director Gilbert Felli.
