Press Release | Death of Colonel Antonio Rodrìguez

15 May 2007 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was greatly saddened to learn of the death of Colonel Antonio Rodríguez, IOC member from 1990 to 2006 and IOC honorary member since 2006.

Colonel Antonio Rodríguez played a major role in promoting the values of sport for decades throughout his career as President of the Argentinean Olympic Committee (1977 to 2005), during which time he founded the Argentinean Olympic Academy. He was also involved in the continental development of sport as President of the Organising Committee for the 1st Pan-American Winter Games (La Lena in 1990), Secretary General then first Vice-Presidentee of the 1st of PASO (the Pan-American Sports Organisation), and President of ODESUR (the South-American Sports Organisation). He was also a member of the Inte of ODESUR and founder of the Argentinian Olympic Academy in 1982. rnational Fair Play Committee.

Elected as an IOC member in 1990, Colonel Antonio Rodríguez was a member of the IOC Sport for All Commission.

A keen sportsman, he participated in modern pentathlon in the 1948 Summer Olympic Games in London, and the Pan-American Games in 1951 (where he placed third in the team competition). He was also Argentinean team fencing champion in 1952 and 1957, individual champion at the 1957 South American Games at Rio de la Plata and army pistol shooting champion in 1963. He headed the Argentinean delegation at the Summer Games in Montreal in 1976.

The IOC expresses its deepest sympathy to Colonel Rodríguez’s family.
