Bode Miller won’t compete in Vancouver 2010 — or will he?

by Sasha Manuel on April 16th, 2007

I’m a tad bit confused.

Will Bode Miller be competing or not competing in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics?

To quote Union Leader,

“I’m in the process of making a decision about participating in World Cup next year,” Miller added. “The Olympics are a long way off. I’d have to find some motivation.”

The article somehow suggests that Miller is “still” thinking about competing in the Olympics and his decision to be back on the slopes of New Hampshire is a way to get back into shape and find the motivation he was talking about. Well, at least, that’s the impression the article left on me.

Whereas to quote International Herald Tribune,

Even if he still is skiing World Cup in 2010, Bode Miller says he won’t be skiing in another Olympics, not after his “terrible” experience in the last one.

“It’s highly doubtful that I’ll be racing in 2010,” America’s top skier said Friday, “and even if I am racing in World Cup, I wouldn’t go (to the Olympics).

I reckon that bit says it all, eh? That didn’t leave room for any sort of imagination.

Which brings me back to the original thought (or was it a question?) I had when I started writing this post, is Bode Miller still competing in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver or not?

Perhaps any of you guys can clue me in?

Sounds like he’s not going to participate in Vancouver unless something really unexpected happens. The fact that he’d “have to find some motivation” suggests to me that he doesn’t have any right now. My $0.02…

I’m a friend of Bode’s & yeah, he is pretty set on not competing in 2010 because he feels America turned its back on him. His entire career has always been, “Its not about winning medals, its about how well he competes & skis. Its about speed, going as fast as he can on his boards.”

Bode got pretty darn bashed around during the 2006 Games & afterwards too. I mean, his family, even the youngest members got “death threats” post the Olympics from American’s & that really shook him up. He openly admitted before going into the 2006 Olympics, it would be for unpure reasons. I don’t know what all of his reasons were but I do know it had a lot to do with the inner-working of the USSA.

Bode also admitted he came extremely close to winning medals in the 2006 Games & if American’s & the Media would learn to read the milliseconds that factor a winner in Ski Racing then that would of saved a lot of bashing. But, he couldn’t control any of that & had to take the beating instead.

Bode’s Media comments that became so famous in 2006 were from frustration & his way of pushing back. To know how hard it is to be Bode Miller, you needed to be born him.

I think going by what Bode has said all this past year & even these past couple of weeks, he will not ski in the 2010 Games. But, if you’re looking for a little bit of hope, Bode does love to win & knowing him & how divided he is right now with the US Ski Team, if something does change for the better & the USSA backs off him, he may very well surprize us all. Bode is known to change his mind. Let’s hope so.

I am sure the USSA will once again add him to the Olympic A-Team schedule for 2010 but will he show up? That’s completely up to him. Being an American, he does have freedom of choice.

Bode Miller has a deep love for America & he would like to give us that Gold but it’s not his main reason why he became a Ski Racer. Eitherway, he will be in top racing shape at Olympic time just in case.

Too lose such an amazing & exciting Ski Racer such as Bode Miller because of a lot of misunderstandings is truly America’s loss.

Will he ski in the next World’s? Yes. He loves that circuit & wants to win 14-16 races in the (6) months that he competes. That would break any remaining World records for any Ski Racer & I know that is a major motivation factor & goal right now for him. Lets just hope his knee’s hold out.
    Thanks,
    Bode’s Friend

I’ve followed ski racing since the early seventies and had always hoped america could produce the kind of skiier that is bode miller, I have never been so excited about ski racing as I was last year, I would stay up until 3:30 in the am to watch coverage of the races, and I would be so stocked when I saw bode’s time come up #1, and then watch all the intermediate times of the other racers, and it would be all over, bode will live as a ski racing legand.
