Sail Melbourne Hosting the 29er and 49er Worlds in 2008

by Sasha Manuel on December 7th, 2006

Adding to the impressive 2008 roster of the Finn Gold Cup, 470 Mens and Womens World Championships, ISAF Grade 1 Sail Melbourne International Regatta has been chosen to host the 29er and 49er World Championships, which will be held at the flat waters of Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club.

The venue also features beach launching, unrestricted racing areas, excellent prevailing sea breezes and a perfect climate.

The article also mentioned a few of the expected sailors competing in the Worlds:

  • With the 2008 Beijing Olympics looming, Sail Melbourne management expects all the top 49er sailors such as the Olympian SIBELLO brothers Pietro and Gianfranco from Italy, and the second and third World Ranked British pairs Chris DRAPER and Simon HISCOCKS and Stevie MORRISON and Ben RHODES vying not only for the Championship win, but also a place on their National Olympic Sailing Team.
  • DRAPER and HISCOCKS are the Athens 49er bronze medallists and HISCOCKS also won the silver medal as crew at the Sydney 2000 Games.
  • Nathan OUTTERIDGE and Ben AUSTIN will head up the Australian contingent as part of their first Olympic campaign, along with SSCBC member Will PHILLIPS and Jon NEWMAN.
