~~~ Tidbits while I am live blogging ~~~~~
Currently in Alpine Skiing ..
* In the Men’s giant slalom .. Canadian Francois Bourque is currently ranked first .. Of course, this is just Round 1 and Round 2 continues this afternoon (Torino time) .. Go Canada Go! There are 3 other Canadians racings .. see the Live Results HERE
Speaking of Team Canada Men vs Team United States Men
* Although the teams have not yet played each other here at the Olympics, Brad Gushue team has played Pete Fenson’s team here in Winnipeg at the BDO Classic Canadian Open here in January 2006. Gushue won 6-5. :D .. I remember reading that they played another time too in recent times, but Fenson won .. so - today’s game will be the unofficial Tie-Breaker rivalry game itself! Go Team Canada Go!
Where Team Great Britain Women’s curling team stands
* If you didn’t know, GBR’s skip Rhona Martin is the current reigning Olympic champion in women’s curling. To be eligible for the playoffs, she needs TWO things to happen. Firstly, she must win her final game in Session 12 against United States Women. Secondly, Canada must lose against Denmark, or Norway must lose both of their games, this morning (against Denmark see above) and this evening against Russian Federation. Then - there will be a tie-breaker.
Where Team Canada Women’s Curling Stands
* Well, let’s just say that a final standing of 6 wins and 3 losses for Team Canada women will be better than 5 wins and 4 losses, and see what happens during this session 11.
Where Team Canada Men’s Curling Stands
* This is how they stand for the men’s afternoon session 12, and the games are as follows:
Switzerland vs Italy
New Zealand vs Germany
Canada vs United States
* As you can see - the only game that really counts is Canada vs United States. If Canada wins, then all the teams above the grey line qualify and there will be no tie-breakers. If Canada men loses, there will be a 2-way tie with Norway, and depending if Switzerland beats Italy, there could be a 3-way tie.
Series coming to an end
* Team Canada men play their final game this afternoon against United States
* Team Canada women play their final game tonight against Denmark, in the evening session.
* The preliminary series (regular season?) will be over today. For the women’s curling, this morning session 11 and the evening session 12 will be the last games before the playoffs. For the men’s curling, their final session 12 will be during the afternoon session. When all the 12 sessions are complete, each team will have played a total of 9 games. For both men and women - only the top four teams advance to the ‘playoffs’. If needed, the tie-breaker games will occur Tuesday February 21, 2006.
I am not watching any of these gameS
* I mean .. how could I? Non of them are being televised … Perhaps in the evening session 12 they will televise Team Canada women vs Denmark .. but I am watching the live stats!
