Meet the Olympic Mascots

They are cute, aren’t they?
Well, let me introduce to you guys these cute mascots for the Summer Olympics in Beijing 2008.
Beibei is the Fish, JingJing is the Panda, HuanHuan is the Olympic Flame, YingYing is the Tibetan Antelope and NiNi is the Swallow.
They basically represent the colours of the Olympic rings, China’s most popular animals and the Olympic Flame, of course. You can also see if you look at their headpieces closely, that they showcase the five elements of nature: sea, forest, fire, earth and sky. ALso, if you put the names together — Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni — it can be translated to “Welcome to Beijing” just like how a warm host greets his or her guests, thus naming these five cuties, Five Friendlies.
The Five Friendlies’ mission is to seek to unite the world in peace and friendship through the Olympic spirit. They are dedicated to helping Beijing 2008 spread its theme, One World. One Dream., all over participating nations.

Please note that the phrase: “Beijing Huan Ying Ni” literally means “Beijing Welcomes You”, “Huan Ying” means “Welcome” and “Ni” means “You”. If you want to say “Welcome to Beijing”, the correct phrase should have been: “Huan Ying Dao Beijing”, again, here “Huan Ying” means “Welcome”, “Dao” or “Tao” means “To” or “To Arrive In” and it goes without saying “Beijing” means the city of “Beijing” (Capital of China).
