Crosswhite’s Intervention
Australian Commonwealth Games Association chief Perry Crosswhite last night moved to end the saga.
Crosswhite has left it to Jana Pittman to give her gold medal back, like how she has expressed in her letter to the England Team since it is after all her property and it’s her prerogative if she wishes to consumate her offer. But he stressed that Australia would remain in the Commonwealth Games record books as the winner of the 4×400m relay Women event.
Crosswhite’s statement made it clear,
“However, it is also clear their runner made an error when lining up for the changeover. It has been confirmed that this error was noted by the responsible technical official. As such the England team would have been disqualified irrespective of any comment made by an Australia team member.”
The Games association just wants to put a cork on the whole controversy, which was actually fueled further by Pittman’s letter. They want to remember the Games in Melbourne as how it was — wonderful and successful.
It is heartbreaking for England and Australia just got lucky. It a lesson for everyone. For England, to be wary of rules and Australia, to not rely on the rules. It doesn’t really make you the real winner. Okay, you’re just a winner by technical default.
This issue has brought into light certain aspects of the Games that some of the teams often overlook. I reckon it’s one that’s worthy of the cliche, “chalk it up to experience, mate!” Hehehe.
