Cricket in the Games

by Sasha Manuel on March 19th, 2006

There’s been talks about bringing the game of Cricket in the Commonwealth Games. Cricket, being one, if not the only one, of the greatest loves of the Member nations of the Commonwealth in terms of playing a particular sport. Organisers and Members of the Federation have expressed their keen interest in the action but there are several factors that needs to be considered.

Major considerations include the following:

  • World Cricket’s schedule has always been tight that’s why it has been impossible to include the sport in the Commonwealth Games.
  • A Test Match Cricket, even a One Day one, will be the a difficult format because of time constraints. The only available option left is playing Twenty20.

The possibility of this happening in the XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India is slim to none. It’s been said that they claim to not want to play Twenty20 in lieu of a Test or One Day match. However, if Scotland wins the bid to host the XX Commonwealth Games in Glascow in 2014, they are willing to include Cricket as one of the events.

I really don’t blame the people who would want to include Cricket in the Games. I love the sport. I got addicted to it. It’s one of the things I find that’s missing in the whole sport atmosphere that the Games have established. If they succeed in introducing Cricket to the Games in the future, perhaps more countries will put up their own Cricket team and will be seen competing in World Cricket, too. This sport will definitely grow more popular than it already is.
