Top Athletes of Australia

by Sasha Manuel on October 28th, 2006

… in Paul Johnson’s list.

The Australia’s Top 101 athletes list that was published on Alpha magazine pushed him to mull it over and come up with his own. But instead of listing 101 of them, he picked the top 25 that he thinks is notable.

  1. Steve Waugh - cricket
  2. Shane Warne - cricket
  3. Pat Rafter - tennis
  4. Mick Doohan - motorcycle racing
  5. Layne Beachley - women’s surfing

  1. Luc Longley - basketball
  2. John Eales - rugby
  3. Gary Ablett - footy | aussie rules football
  4. Dennis Lillee - cricket
  5. Susie O’Neill - swimmer [freestyle, butterfly]
  6. Greg Norman - golf
  7. Ian Thorpe - swimming [freestyle]
  8. Kieren Perkins - swimming [long distance events]
  9. Allan Langer - rugby league
  10. Cathy Freeman - athletics [track]
  11. Pat Cash - tennis
  12. Dave Nilsson - baseball
  13. Anne Sargeant - netball

I recommend you check his article for a more thorough explanation on why these sports stars made his list.

I’m surprised Glenn McGrath didn’t make the list. Although not olympics stuff, it is a big thing in Australian sports at the mo that he and Shane Warne have announced their retirements.

I guess Paul Johnson [the guy who made that list] isn’t a big fan of McGrath. AND Warne’s retirement should garner mixed reactions — positive and negative — I reckon! LOL. But he’ll be missed. I wonder how his wife took it? Hmmm. Time to check the gossip columns! Hehe. ;)
