Athletes and their coaches
When I read the news today and saw the headline, “Chinese runner claims coach beat her,” I couldn’t help but be baffled by such cruel coaching techniques. Has it come to the point wherein the athlete gives full reign to their coaches in the hope that these so-called professionals are the keys to their Olympic dreams?
It’s actually doubly funny when I further read that this Chinese marathon runner — 10,000-meter bronze medalist at the 2003 World Championships —- is now serving a 2-year ban for testing positive for the steroid androsterone. The coach, who also happen to be the former head coach of China’s Athletic Team, has been consequently banned for life after the incident.
Though I agree that such acts of violence should be reported to help stop them from recurring, I can’t help but wonder if it’s just a ploy to win the public’s sympathy since this marathon runner’s ban will be lifted in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. If that’d be true, I reckon this athlete, it goes the same for the rest, should focus on their preparation and on qualifying instead of their “publicity”.
I’m sure this isn’t the first time MSM has been used to propagate such pleas to favour a certain party.
This brings to mind another incident I came across that tells the sexual relationship between the athlete and her diving coach, noting that the athlete was a minor.
The reality one can face in sports includes drugs, violence and statutory rape? Gah. What has the world come to?
